What Are Magna Magnet Postcards and How Do I Design One?

Magna Magnet Postcards are a traditional 6×9 postcard with a detachable magnet. The magnet portion is part of the postcard, and after delivery, recipients can remove it and place it on any magnetic surface (e.g., a fridge, filing cabinet, locker, etc.)

This format keeps your message and contact information visible long after the postcard is delivered, increasing recall and the chances of repeat engagement.

How Magna Works

  1. Production
    • The postcard prints as a standard 6″×9″ card with your chosen design on the front.
    • A magnet layer is integrated into the postcard backing for a designated cut-out section.
  1. Delivery
    • The card is mailed via standard USPS postcards and arrives looking like any other postcard.
    • The magnet section is marked and ready to be removed.
  1. Recipient Interaction
    • When the recipient flips the card over, they’ll see the section that detaches - usually framed or indicated in the design.
    • The recipient removes the magnet portion along a perforated or cut line.
    • The magnet sticks on magnetic surfaces like refrigerators, cubicle boards, or filing cabinets. This keeps your brand, message, or contact information in the recipient’s line of sight.

Best Practices for Clients Using Magna

✔ Include clear visual cues on the back
Add a simple instruction like “Detach this magnet and stick it on your fridge or workspace!” so recipients immediately know the card’s purpose.

✔ Make the front magnet design functional and memorable
The magnet artwork should carry your most important message - contact information, a QR code, or a key CTA - because that’s what the recipient will keep and see every day.

✔Use magnets to reinforce frequency
Since a magnet stays visible longer, consider pairing it with a special offer, QR code, or reorder incentive. This increases recall and repeat action.

Designing Your Magna Card in Canva

To make designing your Magna Card easy, we provide a Canva template that includes clearly marked safe zones and cut lines for both the front and back of the card.

How to Use the Canva Template

  1. Open the provided Canva template using the link below.
  2. Design your card within the indicated safe zones to ensure nothing important is trimmed or cut off.
  3. Use the cut line guides to position the magnet section correctly on the front of the card.
  4. Customize the design with your branding, messaging, QR codes, and imagery.

Important: Remove the Guides Before Downloading

The safe zone and cut line guides are for reference only and should not appear in your final artwork.

Before downloading your design:

  • Delete or hide all guide layers (safe zones, cut lines, and instructional text).
  • Double-check that only your final artwork remains visible.
  • Download the file according to the export settings outlined below.

Tip: If the guide elements are locked in the template, simply unlock them, delete them, or turn off their visibility before saving.

Why This Matters

Leaving guide lines or instructional text visible in your final file may result in those elements being printed on your card. Removing them ensures a clean, professional final product.

Uploading Your Magna Card to Thanks.io

Once your design is finalized and downloaded from Canva, the next step is to upload it to your image templates in Thanks.io.

How to Upload Your Magna Card Design

  1. Log in to your Thanks.io account.
  2. Navigate to Image Templates in the main menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Magna Cards section.
  4. Click Upload Magna Card.
  5. Enter a file name for your design.
  6. Select the file you downloaded from Canva and upload it.

Review Your Preview

After the upload is complete, a preview of your Magna Card will appear.

  • Review the preview carefully to confirm:
    • All important content is inside the safety zone
    • The magnet section is positioned correctly
    • No guide lines or instructional text are visible
  • If adjustments are needed, return to Canva, make edits, and re-upload the updated file.

This review step helps ensure your Magna Card prints correctly and looks exactly as intended.

Yes.  Magna postcards are mailed through USPS just like standard postcards but include the integrated magnet piece.
